Propfan modifiye bir turbofan motordur ve ultra-high by-pass (UHB) motor olarak da bilinir.Propfan teknoljisi kullanımı ile yakıt tüketiminde %60'a varan azalma düşünülmekteydi ancak proje 90'larda turbofan motorların gelişmesi ile gereksiz görülüp rafa kaldırılmıştır.
Proje çalışmalarına 80'lerde başlanmıştır,ve NASA öncülüğünde devam edilmiştir
Boeing 727 - 7J7 ve McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (test uçağı "MD-94X") modellerinde denenmiştir.
Üreticisi General Electirics Amerika'dır.

Ruslar 90'larda boş durmamış mükemmel bir kopyasını oluşturdukları "Progress D27" adında bir çift propfanı Antonov AN-70 uçağında başarılı bir şekilde denemişlerdir.
